# On Ethnogenesis, Passionaries & Subpassionaries After a brief back and forth with [@VEDIC_CYBERGOD](https://twitter.com/VEDIC_CYBERGOD) on the role of retrovirus and gut bacteria in adaptive evolution, or rather whether the process is proactive or reactive in relation to selection pressure I was inspired to share how it relates to Ethnogenesis Ethnogenesis is the process by which an ethnos is formed and develops. Comparatively using its phases, you can isolate ethnocultural hypotheses which are abnormal in relation to the process of ethnogenesis. Here are the phases: 1. Incubation Phase – By the end of which a new ethnos is spawned from a passionary population living in and adapting to a shared geography. Driving imperative : **“Be who you have to be”** 2. Growth Phase - Political formalization of the ethnos, increase in complexity of its structures, appearance of subpassionaries, and an assertion of the right to be of the new ethnos among its neighbors. Driving imperative : **"Be who you should be"** 3. Acmatic Phase - The density of passionaries is such that they begin to interfere with each other and, by proxy, the stability of the ethnos; the excess passionaries either spill out beyond the range of the ethnos, or annihilate eachother. Driving imperative : **"Be yourself”** 4. Crisis Phase - Most troubled phase in ethnogenesis, starting with a population explosion and ending with a demographic decline. Decrease in passionaries. Increase in subpassionaries and their principles. Driving imperative : **“We are tired of the greats”** 5. Inertial Phase – Stabilization of the ethnos. Passionaries cease to interfere with each other and culture flourishes as it becomes possible to preserve cultural wealth which was often destroyed in the fires of previous "passionate" phases. Driving imperative : **"Be like me"** 6. Decline Phase - The stability of the ethnos is lost when the passionaries become so few that the systemic connections supported by their energy weaken and break. Subpassionaries gain predominance, dictating their imperatives. Driving imperative : **"Be like us."** 7. Homeostatic Phase - If the ethnos survives it returns to its original energy level. Only harmonious individuals remain, in balance with their geography, which previously was destroyed by subpassionaries. Driving imperative : **"Be content with yourself"** Influencing, but not to be confused with, the stages of civilization. This is a biological process, not a legislative-cultural one. An isolated ethnos can remain in homeostasis until a stressor moves it to the first phase. ## A quick glossary : **Passionaries** – The minority of driven individuals capable of deep abstraction and conceptualization. Can perceive and combine past, present, and future with logic. Others are attracted to them, and they can convince and lead them without forgetting their main role. **Subpassionaries** – The majorty of passive individuals rooted in the present. Generally devoid of aspirations and focused on the short-term. Desire security, comfort, and self-sufficiency. Higher abstractions are either incomprehensible to them, or misunderstood.
